Barbara L. Andersen, Ph.D.
Dr. Andersen (Dept of Psychology of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences) and is a Distinguished University Scholar and Distinguished Lecturer at Ohio State. She has also received numerous awards and recognitions in her long standing studies of the effects of psychological interventions in the course of breast cancer treatment and recovery.
In November 2008, Dr. Barbara Andersen and her team of co-authors published a seminal article in the journal CANCER, “Psychologic intervention improves survival for breast cancer patients,” describing a 14-year study involving 227 women.
The paper concludes that psychological interventions providing a broad range of support, did indeed significantly increase the participants’ overall ability to fight the disease. It indicated increased ability to fight recurrence of the disease, and even in survivorship when there was recurrence — and long after the interventions had been performed.
