Office of Research Units:

Industry Liaison Office
The Industry Liaison Office (ILO) was launched in December 2008 to foster economic development opportunities in Ohio and beyond by connecting business and industry to Ohio State discoveries, ground-breaking research, and experts in targeted research areas. Ohio State has achieved world-class status in such areas as global climate change, materials research, electromagnetics, medical imaging, cancer, infectious and cardiovascular diseases, environmental sciences, and agbioproducts.

Office of Funding and Research Development
Research Development at The Ohio State University is a collaborative effort between the university community and the Office of Funding and Research Development. Office staff will help clarify funding needs, search for funding opportunities, and then create alerts to provide information about new and updated funding opportunities. Support is also provided for working with sponsors, locating collaborators, identifying interdisciplinary research possibilities, or working with other Office of Sponsored Programs departments.

Office of Research Compliance
The mission of the Office of Research Compliance (ORC) is to support and promote ethical research practices at Ohio State. ORC serves the Ohio State research community by coordinating institution-wide research compliance policy and procedure development, and by partnering with researchers, so that the university is compliant with federal, state, and local laws and regulations as well as university policies.

Office of Responsible Research Practices
The Office of Responsible Research Practices (ORRP) provides administrative support to the university research community and the review boards responsible for research oversight.  The ORRP staff helps Ohio State faculty, staff, and student researchers navigate regulations governing research in a way that fosters ethical conduct, ensures compliance, and minimizes administrative burden.

Office of Sponsored Programs
The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) partners with faculty and staff to provide the highest quality research administration at all stages of sponsored projects, from identifying funding sources through project closeout. OSP facilitates the scholarly activities of the research community as it positions the University to become the leading public research institution in the nation.

Office of Training, Education, and Communication
The Office of Research, Training, Education, and Communication (ORTEC) works with all Office of Research administrative units to develop and coordinate comprehensive training, education, and communication for The Ohio State University research community. ORTEC provides training and education services to all key personnel involved in the conduct of research.

Technology Licensing and Commercialization
The Technology Licensing and Commercialization (TLC) team cultivates and advances commercialization opportunities afforded by the intellectual assets created through Ohio State research.  TLC’s mission is to foster a university-wide entrepreneurial culture, catalyze faculty, staff, and student inventions, assist in maximizing the value of Ohio State developments, and accelerate transition of new developments into products, services, and new or expanded jobs.

University Laboratory Animal Resources
University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR) is responsible for the animal care and use program. Over 100,000 square feet of animal housing space in 15 facilities can accommodate rodents, rabbits, swine, ruminants, and dogs as well as other species. Rodent facilities have over 70 dedicated rooms which include barrier housing , sterile housing, phenotyping, and GEM production facilities. The program is supported by a staff consisting of a veterinarian ACLAM diplomate, 5 clinical veterinarians, and over 70 full time animal care staff.

Administrative Research Council
The Administrative Research Council (ARC) is an Ohio State network bringing together administrative personnel involved in grants management from across the university. ARC focuses on information exchange, education and training, grants policy and procedure development, process improvement, and other activities that support faculty research, scholarship, and artistic endeavors.

Undergraduate Research Office
The Undergraduate Research Office provides a central clearinghouse for information relating to the promotion and coordination of research involving undergraduate students. We maintain a large email list, and are happy to recruit students to assist in your research projects. We also provide general informational support to undergraduate researchers throughout their careers, from “Getting Started” info sessions to our quarter-long Summer Research Institute, and at all points between.

Byrd Polar Research Center
The Byrd Polar Research Center (BPRC) has a full array of resources developed for and by researchers, including a machine shop, a Class 100 clean room, and research laboratories. Key staff members assist with administrative aspects of grants submission and management, technology needs, and travel, including deployment and return of field teams and samples. The Goldthwait Polar Librarian enriches access to research literature. The Center is videoconferencing-capable, and has a 110-seat Auditorium.

Campus Chemical Instrument Center
The mission of the Campus Chemical Instrument Center (CCIC) is to provide state-of-the-art research facilities for the entire campus in three areas: nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and proteomics. Since the NMR, MS and Proteomics Facilities are central hubs for the Ohio NMR and Ohio MS Consortiums, respectively, all researchers in the colleges and universities of the State of Ohio have access to all facilities of the CCIC with the same user fees.

Campus Microscopy & Imaging Facility
Campus Microscopy and Imaging Facility (CMIF) is the biomedical research core microscope facility with two electron microscopes and four confocal microscopes, all purchased in the last five years. Routine transmission electron microscopy and high resolution scanning electron microscopy are available. There are two confocal microscopes each with four lasers, for examining slides of fixed tissue and cells. The staff assists and trains users on the instruments and in sample preparation.

Institute for Energy & the Environment
The mission of the Institute for Energy and the Environment is to advance The Ohio State University’s national role and success with solving the global energy issues while promoting environmental sustainability by expanding and coordinating university assets and outreach.

Institute for Materials Research
The Institute for Materials Research (IMR) is the gateway to materials-allied research at The Ohio State University. IMR facilitates, promotes and coordinates research activities and infrastructure related to the science and engineering of materials. Programs for OSU materials researchers include: Members of Technical Staff; management of major user facilities; Research Enhancement Program with 3 internal research funding opportunities; IMR Colloquia Series and annual Materials Week.

Ohio Supercomputer Center
The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) is a catalytic partner of Ohio universities and industries that provides reliable high performance computing for education, academic research, industry, and state government. Funded by the Ohio Board of Regents, OSC promotes and stimulates computational research and education in order to act as a key enabler for the state’s aspirations in advanced technology, information systems, and advanced industries.

Ohio Sea Grant & F.T. Stone Laboratory
Ohio Sea Grant is a program of NOAA that funds research and provides extension/education services regarding Lake Erie and coastal issues. Our large-grant cycle spans two years; we accept small-grant proposals anytime. Originally founded in 1895, OSU’s Stone Lab is the oldest freshwater biological field station in the US. The lab offers many research-support services, including grant-supported access to its research fleet and an endowment-supported REU program.

Center for Clinical & Translational Science
The Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) assists Ohio State and Nationwide Children’s Hospital investigators with programs to help develop, perform and disseminate translational science research. Programs include biomedical informatics and biostatistics support, PILOT funding, education and community engagement. Technology cores include drug discovery and animal models, LCM, miRNA, proteomics and biomedical imaging. Human-subject-research units assist with clinical trials, phlebotomy, bionutrition and bioassay analysis.

Chemistry Research Support Services
Chemistry Research Support Services provide hands on access to instrumentation. Instruments supported in the RSS facilities include powder x-ray diffractometers, Raman-IR microprobe, calorimetry, NMR spectrometers for liquids and solids, spatially resolved XPS, and a single crystal diffractometer. The Chemistry Instrumentation Support Group, The Scientific Glass Blowing Lab and the Chemistry Machine Shop provide instrument and apparatus design and development services.

Dionex – SILVER SPONSOR

The mission of the Knowledge Bank is to collect, preserve and distribute digitally formatted intellectual output of the OSU faculty, staff and students, that is currently or will be of research interest.

OARDC Grant Development Support Unit
The Grant Development Support Unit (GDSU) is a service for the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and is located at OARDC in Wooster and in the Agricultural Administration Building in Columbus, within the OARDC Director’s Office. The GDSU provides assistance to CFAES faculty and staff by providing grant development services. These services will increase the level of funded proposals and allow investigators to focus on concepts, science and the generation of knowledge.

Offices of the Chief Information Officer
The Offices of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) provide services to help Ohio State faculty, researchers, students and staff use technologies in learning, teaching, research, and administrative settings.

Office of International Affairs
The Office of International Affairs (OIA) works with students interested in conducting research in international destinations. While many study abroad programs include a research component, the Individualized Study Abroad Program provides an opportunity for students to design an independent research project with the support of an Ohio State faculty mentor. OIA advises and provides information about resources available to students and their faculty advisors in preparation for research abroad.

Through our partnership with OSURF, you can easily import your grant information for your OSU:pro-generated curriculum vitae (CV), Core Dossier and research reports. The OSU:pro team provides training and support to users of this system.

Outreach and Engagement
The offices under the Outreach and Engagement umbrella focus on improving lives through teaching, research, and service. We provide tools and resources to assist in the formation of partnerships that leverage the knowledge, talent, and culture of the university. We provide seed grants and professional development, support development of service-learning courses, assist researchers with outreach components of grant proposals, and partner with faculty to deliver continuing education programming.

Plant-Microbe Genomics Facility
The Plant-Microbe Genomics Facility serves The Ohio State University by providing the expertise and means to study genomes from DNA sequence to protein expression. The facility can sequence genes and analyze their frequency and distribution with genotyping. Gene expression can be determined precisely with real-time PCR. The gene products can be separated and identified with proteomics. How the proteins and genes interact can be measured as well. The facility is a cost recovery unit.

Prior Health Sciences Library and The Center for Knowledge Management
The Prior Health Sciences Library and Center for Knowledge Management offers a wide array of research services and resources including: a large collection of health databases and journals, a dedicated research librarian, historical materials and research services, guidance on copyright law issues, advice on scholarly publishing and research evaluation, research poster production, and design of customized brochures and Web-based applications.

Research Billing Office
The Research Billing Office (RBO) provides the following services: Research Rate Quotes; New Research Accounts; Research Account Billing; Coverage Analysis Assistance; Submission for Medicare Approval of Investigational Devices; Training for Health System Research Billing processes.
