If a Tree Falls in the Forest…The Conundrum of Science Communications
Earle Holland, assistant vice president for research communications, University Communications

Public reliance on the traditional news media has given way to blogs, Facebook, and Twitter. Television is still the primary source for news in the U.S. but it is also the most-loathed for its inaccuracy and bias. Professional science and medical writers in the media are being laid off by the score. The number of academic journals now exceeds 10,000. The cut-off level for scores that land applicants grants has climbed dramatically. Some science organizations and scholars are, in effect, urging researchers to embrace the notion of marketing and spin when explaining their work and the public’s attention span for news has led to 8-second soundbites. How are scientists and scholars supposed to explain their work to “normal” people?
